Does solar hot water really work in our climate?

Solar hot water systems can supply 60% to 70% of your annual hot water heating needs at a reasonable cost, even in the Pacific Northwest. Contact me if you would like more detailed data. I have daily and monthly records of my system's performance over the last two years.

Cost?

Solar hot water systems are by far the most cost effective renewable energy systems. An easy installation that can produce about 60% of a two person household's annual hot water needs costs about $5000. Given the latest increases in energy prices, it would not be unreasonable to assume a 10% annual rate of inflation. If we experience a 10% rate of inflation over the next 11 years you could very well spend $5000 on hot water heating, whether or not you purchase a solar hot water system.

So, you might as well purchase a system and enjoy saving %60 of your hot water heating costs for the next 30 years or more. Additionally, you will be helping to reduce your global warming emissions, which scientists are saying we need to reduce 50% to 80% by 2030.

Federal tax incentives now give a homeowner a tax credit for 30% of the installed system cost, up to $2000.

Currently, no sales tax is charged on solar hot water systems in Washington State.

Additional applications: Seasonal Hot Tub and Pool Heating

The basic solar hot water system described above can easily meet a 2 person households' hot water needs and heat a small hot tub during July and August. The same system can provide significant pre heat for a small hot tub from May through August.
